A New Chapter for Alamo Heights High School

After two years of construction, the new Alamo Heights High School academic building is welcoming students and staff into a space designed for the next generation of Mules.

Built by Bartlett Cocke General Contractors in partnership with Alamo Heights ISD and LPA Design Studios as part of the district’s 2023 Bond Program, the new three-story building provides larger classrooms, collaborative learning areas, multipurpose spaces and outdoor learning opportunities.

Just as important, the project carries pieces of Alamo Heights history forward.

The familiar Mule statue has returned near the entrance. Letters from the previous building now have a home in the new library. Alumni photographs, the recreated “Bucking Mule” mural and other details throughout the building connect today’s students with generations who came before them.

For our team, that balance was an important part of the project. Building a new school on an established campus is about more than creating modern learning spaces. It means understanding what matters to the people who use the campus and preserving that sense of place while preparing it for the future.

The project also required careful planning throughout construction. Students and staff continued learning on campus using temporary facilities while the new academic building took shape. On an active school campus, logistics, safety, access and communication have to work alongside the construction schedule every day.

That is a responsibility we know well. Bartlett Cocke has spent decades building Texas schools with the understanding that these facilities are more than classrooms. They are places where communities learn, gather and create memories.

Now, the best part begins: watching students and teachers make the building their own.
